Top Speedway returns to Stadion Śląski in Chorzów (Poland)

Save the date: after 15 years top Speedway will return to the Stadion Śląski in Chorzów. The final event of the Individual Speedway European Championship will be organized on 15 September 2018. The stadium has been fully renovated and is now a very modern and state of the art facility, with a capacity of 50.000 spectators. History is still important in Chorzów: It was in 1973 when Polish Speedway legend Jerzy Szczakiel became the first Polish Speedway World Champion. He won the title in front of an enthusiastic crowd of more than 100.000 spectators after a run-off with the defending World Champion and all-time great Ivan Mauger from New Zealand.

FIM Europe´s promotion partner One Sport presented the project on the occasion of a press conference in the Stadion Śląski, assisted by representatives from the regional Government, the Stadion, PZM and last, but not least, FIM Europe.

Meetings at the Stadion Śląski will be taken next year, but already very soon fans can expect another information about events’ organization. “In a month, we will present visualization of the track, which will be prepared in the beginning of September 2018” stated Jan Konikiewicz, Vice-President of One Sport.

“It’s actually happening! After 15 years, Speedway is coming back to Stadion Śląski” said Wojciech Saługa, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship.

Krzysztof Klimosz, the President of Slaski Stadium Management Board, added: “By building this stadium as a multifunctional venue, that’s what we cared about – to organize various events. We’re really happy that speedway is coming back to Chorzów”.

“I would like to say that I’m sure that the event will be a huge success. We started our cooperation with One Sport few years back and I can admit and we were not wrong. I am sure that One Sport will handle this challenge and in September 2018 we will witness a great show” explained Piotr Szymański, Chairman FIM Europe Track Racing Commission as well as the head of Polish Speedway in PZM.
Dr. Wolfgang Srb, FIM Europe President, concluded: “FIM Europe pays a big attention to quality of their events. Top location, organizer, promotion partner, national Federation, level of the sport – that´s all very important. Plus, Poland is a leading country in the world of Speedway. Stadion Śląski in Chorzów is an outstanding venue, I’m really impressed with this stadium – see you in September 2018!”
